Late in 1998 as the volume of cash and resources thrown at the Millennium Dome reached tidal wave proportions, it seemed to Mid Wales based coppersmith Richard Taylor that there might just be a better way of catching a more endearing spirit of the moment.

He made a dragon’s tooth in copper and held it up to see who, fuelled by enthusiasm alone, would help him to build an ambitious Millennium Dragon Sculpture in which the tooth could be embedded.

Through the good will of hundreds of people who shared the vision, informal networks grew and in the end 5,000 people worldwide each made a little piece, marked it with their thumbprint, stamped it with their name and often recorded a personal dedication. A small team of volunteers in Rhayader, Mid Wales assembled the sculpture.
